A$AP Rocky and Tyler, the Creator will be hitting the Pepsi Live stage at Rogers Arena next Tuesday November 10th. Danny Brown and Vince Staples will accompany them in support for the ‘Rocky and Tyler’ tour.
Born Rakim Mayers, A$AP Rocky was named after one half of Erik B. & Rakim, an influential hip-hop duo from Long Island, New York – perhaps an indication of the greatness to come. Rocky started rapping at the age of eight and was influenced by a number of artists, including The Diplomats, Mobb Depp, Three 6 Mafia, Bone Thugs-n-Harmony, among others. His sophomore album, At.Long.Last.A$AP, was released earlier this year and well received by fans and critics alike, noted for its maturity. The record features a long list of collaborators, most crucially Rocky’s late mentor A$AP Yams, and Joe Fox – a formerly homeless artist who Rocky met on the streets of London at 4am.
Tyler, the Creator emerged as co-founder and leader of the Los Angeles based rap collective, Odd Future, back in 2010. In April, Tyler released his fourth album, Cherry Bomb, which debuted at no. 4 on the Billboard charts – an impressive feat, considering it was a surprise album release. Tyler has been vocal in interviews about his excitement about the record, which he has said is musically representative of what he has tried to achieve through his previous albums – layered with his trademark storytelling lyrics and a collage of influences.
Tyler and Danny Brown were performers at this summer’s FVDED in the Park at Surrey’s Holland Park. Brown has been a music festival staple throughout his career, which is understandable, as his music is as energetic and colourful as his persona. Fellow opener Vince Staples has also received a nod in the vibrancy of his music, both in his debut record Summertime ’06 and in his live show.
