The Weeknd Brings the Party to The Weekday

If there is one artist that can make you forget that it’s a Wednesday night, leave it to The Weeknd. The Madness Fall Tour made a stop last night at Pepsi Live at Rogers Arena, playing to a sold-out crowd.

Travi$ Scott and Halsey opened the evening and provided an energetic start to the show. There is a distinct sound to Scott’s music, as he uses a vocoder to provide vocal effects in his live performance. The Houston rapper brought a high level of energy to his set, particularly when he played his hit “Antidote”. Halsey made her way on stage dressed in a slick, monotone outfit, performing songs from her debut album Badlands.

As the lights went down ahead of The Weeknd’s headlining set, the crowd erupted with cheers of excitement. Barely breaking a sweat during his entire performance, The Weeknd was calm, cool, and collected. It’s easy to see why Abel Tesfaye has proven himself to be one of the top artists of 2015, with his recent American Music Award wins and a sold-out tour under his belt. Tesfaye has often drawn comparisons to Michael Jackson, which can be heard in tracks such as “House of Balloons” with the slick beats and his signature smooth vocals. He even threw in a cover of “Dirty Diana” leading into his own track, “In The Night”.

It takes a certain kind of artist to make an arena feel intimate, and The Weeknd certainly succeeded. The elements of digital screens and pyro aside, there is an intensity to Tesfaye’s voice that draws you into his world. The crowd eagerly sang along to all his songs, connecting the rawness of his lyrics as the soundtrack to their lives. Before returning to the stage for an encore performance of his hit, “Wicked Games”, Tesfaye made mention to the sold-out crowd that they were in attendance to the ‘biggest party in the city’ – and there is no doubt about that, especially on a Wednesday night.
